Meet the woman behind every Van Zyl handbag

Making a legacy, one stitch at a time
The House
Atelier Van Zyl was founded on a simple belief: that objects made with care should be created to endure.
The house carries my mother’s maiden name, Van Zyl. It was through her that the philosophy behind the atelier first took shape — one rooted in permanence, quiet strength, and the importance of preserving what holds meaning.
Every handbag is handcrafted entirely by me in my Atelier, one at a time, using traditional saddle stitching and entirely machine-free construction. Each commission is cut, stitched, edge-finished, and completed by hand, allowing time for precision rather than production.
Atelier Van Zyl does not follow seasonal collections or mass production schedules. Only forty-eight handbags are commissioned annually. This limitation exists by design, preserving the time required to create each handbag with care and without compromise.
The handbags themselves carry a personal lineage.
Nicole, named after my youngest daughter, is an architectural expression of structure and refinement.
Lynn, named after myself, reflects a quieter form of permanence — a companion intended for daily life and long ownership.
Future house silhouettes, Kayleigh and Suzette, continue this family lineage, carrying the names of my eldest daughter and my mother.
Atelier Van Zyl handbags are intentionally created without exterior logos. Their identity lies not in overt branding, but in proportion, craftsmanship, materials, and discretion.
Each commission is designed to be lived with and cared for over time. Every handbag is constructed with longevity and repairability in mind, allowing for maintenance, restoration, and refinishing within the atelier when required. Handles may be restored, hardware refinished, edges renewed, and interiors preserved — ensuring each handbag may continue its journey for years, and perhaps generations.
Hidden beneath the interior lining of every handbag rests a handwritten signature, date, and atelier mark — unseen, yet deeply personal. It exists not for display, but as a quiet record of authorship and authenticity.
Atelier Van Zyl was never intended to create objects for a season.
Only objects intended to remain.

Start your legacy
The ultimate goal of Van Zyl handbags is to co-create an artifact that reflects your own intentionality and story. You choose the leather, the stitching and the hardware; I contribute the hours, the skill and the legacy of the Van Zyl name. We look forward to starting the conversation.
